Would be a pretty easy change for Thiem to try with his team. Maybe during offseason. Not a difficult grip change to make. Slight shift so he is more like Fed to Wawrinka.
Would give him more RPM, more ability to open up sharp angles, and more strength and spin handling high balls.
It’s worth trying with no downside.
If Thiem likes the adjustment, he could use it year round or just for the clay court season. Some pros do make small adjustments in their grips just for the clay.
If Thiem tried it and the grip didn’t feel comfortable, then I agree with the commentators here who say he should just work with the current grip structure.
My understanding is, as one poster here mentioned, Thiem had a two hander and it was changed to a one hander by his coach, and that Thiem kept the near continental grip with right hand that he had had with the two hander.
That’s my understanding of the technical history of his backhand.
I would be curious to know if his team has experimented with a more Eastern to semiwestern one hand grip structure and if Thiem liked it or not.
