First 4 Myth Frustration

Who has recorded statistics of U12? Who has verified any of these statistics? They are generally coming from one or two sources and unverified by an outside party.

Bruce Gullikson. You have been around the business long enough to know to be cautious about following the latest trend in coaching based on one study or statistical analysis.

Less experienced coaches don’t know this.

Many parents don’t know. Kids don’t know.

We have people now saying that rallies aren’t important. Article being written, presentations at conferences.

It’s a bunch of shuck and jive from people sitting behind a computer screen most of the time.

I put my faith in coaches who have done it. People like Toni Nadal, Luis Bruguera, etc. People who have actually taken a young kid and brought them up from scratch to be a world-class player.

Of course it’s important to be balanced and work serve and returns along with consistency.

But that’s not the latest hot message.

The latest sales pitch is that rallying is a waste of time. Let’s train primarily first 4.

The message is that the Spanish approach is outdated because they grind and rally so much. That’s a bunch of BS.

Here in NY, we have so many kids who can’t play defense—can’t grind. Can’t move. Can’t run and defend well.

The first 4 message all over the media and TV is a disaster for them.

It encourages them to smash every ball with no patience.

Disaster.
