13 Cheating Myths

1. Most kids don’t cheat so it’s not a big issue in junior tennis

2. All children are inherently good and want to make the right call and do the right thing.

3. Kids only cheat on line calls

4. Kids cheat because they feel threatened and inferior to their rivals. Therefore, the rival can take a positive away when facing a cheater.

5. Cheating is just a few points here or there and is not determinant of the outcome of a match.

6. Retaliatory cheating is always wrong.

7. Retaliatory cheating always escalates into more cheating and animosity in a match creating a chaotic situation.

8. If a kid cheats in retaliation, an “eye for an eye,” he will grow up learning that cheating is okay and will cheat in his future life and work.

9. Parents and observers shouldn’t get involved with a cheating argument because if they intervene then the children won’t learn to problem solve and won’t develop important character traits.

10. Cheating is part of the game and kids need to learn how to handle it.

11. Learning to deal with cheating builds character and therefore cheating in junior tennis can be seen a positive rite of passage.

12. If a kid is getting cheated, he can just call an umpire over to help and this will solve the problem.

13. Cheating stops when kids reach higher level tournaments or college and pro tennis.
