Groundstroke Technique Myth #1

Young kids should be taught to use closed stances and to stay on the ground during the swing to simplify the learning process and develop their balance.

Truth:

Little kids can and should be taught open stances and especially jumping into their forehands and backhands. This helps to spin their hips, and to develop the elasticity and parabolic swing path that typifies modern stroke mechanics.

Players can learn dynamic balance by jumping and stabilizing themselves on landing at the stroke completion.

Teaching jumping into groundstrokes and training balance are not mutually exclusive.
