Orange Ball Power Drain

Dear Friends and Tennis Minds:

From a high performance development angle, I’ve seen too many kids ruined by U10 red/orange/green ball programs.

The orange ball years are especially worrisome.

I see too many players held back for too long in the orange stage.

The end results are often players age 10 or 11 who can barely crack an egg with their swings. They have NO POWER.

Have any other coaches witnessed this phenomenon?

The root cause is spending years in a system with a light weight ball, small court, light/small racquet, and a teaching system that doesn’t emphasize power and racquet speed.

All of the aforementioned factors result in players frequently coming out of U10 ROG without any POWER.

They are not strong and have lost several years of strength and racquet speed building.

It’s a shame to see talented kids stuck in a system that will put them years behind yellow ballers who start at a young age.
