Are Tennis Champions Inherently Selfish?

Friends and tennis minds,

To be a great tennis player is a self-focused endeavor, right? For a pro—or any champion at any level.

To be a champion in tennis—or any individual sport—requires an unyielding obsession with the continuous improvement of oneself. It’s a beautiful process and passion to behold. Exquisite. Kaizen.

At the same time, it can be time consuming. It can be an unhealthy obsession for some. It can take away from a life of serving others.

It is inherently selfish to pursue being a champion in tennis.

This is one reason that champions don’t always make great coaches. They have lived a selfish existence to get to the top—take, take, and take.

But to become great as a coach, you have to be selfless—give, give, and give.
