There is no way an athlete as good as Medvedev couldn’t learn a better typical ATP topspin forehand. Could have learned it when he was younger easily. Probably his junior coach or system taught forced him this way. I don’t know his personal developmental history.
I have already stated that he does a great job with the technique he has. I am saying that his forehand could have been better. Could be better.
Sometimes he does whip it in a modern way. He should do that more frequently.
You can argue that everyone has different styles but that can justify any technique for anyone. It’s a fallacious argument.
We have science and modern biomechanics to support the typical ATP style forehand.
We know that the game is changing—has changed dramatically—and topspin has revolutionized the sport in the last 30 years. Biomechanics evolve.
His forehand is an anachronism. It’s not as superior technically as other Next Gen top guys coming up. Or compared to the big 3–Rafa, Fed and Novak. Sometimes it looks like it’s from an old 1970s textbook.
Looks to me that he was likely taught that style from a young age.
Can he still be great and win slams? Of course he can.
