Serve Technique Myth Buster #1

Myth

Little kids can’t or should not jump into the serve. Jumping is “merely a byproduct of forces generated by the kinetic chain.”

Truth

Little kids can and should be taught how to jump into the serve. It’s actually easy for them to learn this basic playground skill.

Jumping builds coordination, strength, and balance in the lower body, and is a more efficient way to teach the serve mechanics, which are based on a kinetic chain facilitated by leg drive.

It’s a waste of time to teach stationary grounded serving to little kids. The extra progressions cost development time.

Teaching dynamic serving with a good jump is faster (speeds up motor skill learning) and can be one of the first skills little kids can learn and master on the serve.
