Wisdom of Toni Nadal: Three Types of Coaches Along the Journey

The coach who makes the game fun and introduces the sport is very important. I would call that coach the Initiation Coach. The coach who does the fundamentals work in the early years I call the Formation Coach. The transitional pro coach I call the Transition or Competition Coach.

  1. Initiation
  2. Formation
  3. Competition or Transition

Basic stages along the journey. This mirrors some of the terms Emilio Sanchez and Luis Mediero use in their ICI Spanish Coach Courses.

Unfortunately, sometimes only the competition coach gets the respect and glory.

Another observation is that often the best coaches gravitate towards competition coaching. We need more talented coaches working in the earlier phases.

Many times the most experienced coaches work only with the transitional pro kids.

We need their experience with the beginners!

That’s why it’s awesome to see a coach like Toni Nadal back working with all levels of developmental kids in Mallorca, for example.
