Federer’s Strategy On Clay Is Foolish!
Roger Federer is under the false notion that he needs to shorten points to the extreme, attack the net with abandon, and take the ball super early and on-the-rise.
These tactical decisions are a mistake on slow courts, and especially on the clay at Roland Garros.
Even one of the most gifted athletes ever to grace the tennis court cannot overcome his poor strategy when facing an equally talented champion like Nadal on clay.
It is a fools errand for Federer to try and take Nadal’s heavy spinning ball at his sock level, half volleying shots that he should let rise up between his hip and shoulder for a more comfortable and controlled hit.
It is a mistake to rush the net impatiently. Roger should rally longer and wait for better moments to attack, preferably behind his great forehand.
I remember the younger Roger who could attack—but who could also grind and defend.
Especially on clay, Roger should try and remember those halcyon days and reestablish the balanced game that made him legendary.
