Robert Lansdorp Paradox

Robert Lansdorp, professional tennis coach

Robert Lansdorp has said that he finds it curious that all his former players thanked him most of all for making them mentally tough. Curious because, paradoxically, he never sought to teach any sport psychology skills.

Lansdorp says that it was more his demeanor, demanding nature, and applying pressure that made his students tough.

Toni Nadal says that “being exigent—or demanding” is critical to coaching success.

Could it be that tough coaching contributes more to player mental toughness than any sport psychology program, book or video?

Parents are shelling out hundreds or thousands of dollars for mental training when they might be better off finding a tough coach who is demanding.
