5 Obsessions of Great Parents

Five simple obsessions that I’ve observed in the best tennis parents who are able to raise prodigies and champions. I’ve noticed that parents of lower performing kids often overlook the importance of the areas below.

These obsessions apply to all sports—not just tennis!

1. Obsession with organization, planning, and goal setting.

Parents of prodigies make an annual development plan and understand that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

They treat their kid’s training like starting a successful entrepreneurial business, and they devote a tremendous amount of energy to planning.

2. Obsession with physical fitness and injury prevention.

Champion parents focus on building the athlete and don’t just focus on tennis skills and results.

3. Obsession with nutrition.

A well fueled athlete performs better. The best parents are dialed into this fact.

4. Obsession with recovery. Post practice and post match.

This can be nutritional and using other available modalities like hydro, cold, and heat therapy, and tech. And don’t forget sleep!

5. Obsession with character building and mindset

Parents of prodigies are obsessed with training their child’s mind to think like a champ. From the youngest years, they are developing character and mental toughness.

Bottom line:

As a parent, you need to prioritize the areas above. If you don’t feel competent in any of these areas, build a team around you who can do it!
