Here are a few often overlooked keys to being a great parent—or coach—of a competitor, both in life and in any sport.
1. Focus on building a champion’s mindset.
-
- This means consciously building up the kid’s character, teaching him or her to be disciplined, work hard, make no excuses, focus in the present, maintain a positive attitude, and to develop a fighting spirit—to name just a few important qualities.
- Kids should also be taught some fundamentals of sport psychology, which any layman can learn and teach, namely:
- Visualization
- Positive self talk
- Breathing control
- Body language control
- Routines
- Etc.
2. Prevent injuries
-
- Stretching for flexibility and mobility
3. Fuel your kid well
-
- Good nutrition and hydration are critical to performance.
4. Be organized. Planning.
5. Recovery
-
- Teach some basics recuperative modalities that any novice can learn.
- Proper cold icing and heat therapy
- Hydro therapy
- Massage
- Stretching
- Use technology wisely. Game ready, recovery pants
