Here are a few often overlooked keys to being a great parent—or coach—of a competitor, both in life and in any sport.

1. Focus on building a champion’s mindset.

    • This means consciously building up the kid’s character, teaching him or her to be disciplined, work hard, make no excuses, focus in the present, maintain a positive attitude, and to develop a fighting spirit—to name just a few important qualities.
    • Kids should also be taught some fundamentals of sport psychology, which any layman can learn and teach, namely:
    • Visualization
    • Positive self talk
    • Breathing control
    • Body language control
    • Routines
    • Etc.

2. Prevent injuries

    • Stretching for flexibility and mobility

3. Fuel your kid well

    • Good nutrition and hydration are critical to performance.

4. Be organized. Planning.

5. Recovery

    • Teach some basics recuperative modalities that any novice can learn.
    • Proper cold icing and heat therapy
    • Hydro therapy
    • Massage
    • Stretching
    • Use technology wisely. Game ready, recovery pants
