The 1980s are Calling and They Want Their One-Hander Back Dominic!

Coaches and Tennis Minds,

Dominic Thiem is a talented player with a big future, but he has a very anachronistic, classical one handed backhand grip and stroke which will always be liability for him.

Reminds me of the antediluvian forehand of Stefan Edberg—which could have been much better than it was.

If Thiem had a better grip structure on the backhand, like Wawrinka, or if he had a two hander like Rafa or Djokovic, he would have probably won Roland Garros by now, and he would be a more dominant player.

It’s a shame that Thiem—with his explosive modern forehand—was allowed to have a very traditional classical backhand.

He could still learn to shift the grip over, more like Wawrinka’s grip, to generate more RPM and to mitigate high ball attacks from the likes of Nadal.

It’s not too late to fix that old school backhand. The 1980s are calling, and they want their one hander back.

Here is Wawrinka
