The Myth of the First 4 Shots Clay Court Edition

It is laughable to hear coaches arguing that we should train mostly the First 4 Shots with young players, especially to develop good clay court players.

Even more asinine is to use statistical data from Rafa Nadal’s ATP matches on clay to further support this specious theory.

Rafa Nadal didn’t train primarily first 4 when he was a kid. He trained for consistency, heavy RPM, grinding and defense. He learned to run and outlast his opponents. He developed patience and shot tolerance.

In short, he developed his game liked dozens of other champion players in Spain have: The Spanish Way.

To use pro data to argue against training this way for success on clay is a complete misinterpretation and misuse of statistical analysis.

Come on coaches out there! Where is your critical thinking and common sense?

Don’t believe every new hyped theory!
