Bruguera Brilliance:
“The essence of the game of tennis is easy–facile–and should be taught as such. Most coaches talk too much and overcomplicate everything.”
–Lluis Bruguera
Luis has coached 25 top 100 ATP players over the course of a legendary career. He is still active and consulting around the world while running his academy in Barcelona.

Note from Chris:
While the biomechanical elements of the game of tennis are very complex–perhaps more demanding than in any other sport–the tactics and strategy in tennis are simple. This is what Luis is trying to explain in this quote. The essence of the game of tennis for him is:
- Put the ball over the net and within the confines of the lines.
- Run a lot.
- Make your opponent run more than you.
- Be willing to suffer.
- Make fewer mistakes than your opponent.
Are you teaching your players these simple truths? Are you overcomplicating the message to them by getting too technical or too detailed with strategies? Sometimes players lose sight of these simple truths in tennis. Luis advises to keep the guidance you give to your players as simply as you can.
