“Overtraining is one of the worst developmental mistakes a coach can make with a player. The player can grow irritable, lose motivation, and risk injury.”
–Luis Bruguera
Note from Chris:
This is why many of the academies in Spain offer only three to three and a half hours of tennis training daily as compared to other academy systems which sometimes play as much as double this amount of tennis daily. The Spanish approach focuses less time on the tennis court and more time working the physical side of the training off court. These two aspects foster healthier players both physically and mentally, and lead to less injury prone professional prospects. The advantage of this approach in Spain cannot be underestimated, yet this is one “secret” of Spanish tennis that is rarely understood.
Luis Bruguera is the director of Bruguera Academy in Barcelona and has been a long-time mentor to Chris Lewit.
